1950's CHANEL

During the 1950’s Chanel was known for her timeless suit design, purses, pea jackets, and bell-bottomed pants. These designs largely impacted the fashion world, hence the fact that the Chanel suit is a never dying staple to timeless pieces, bell-bottomed pants became a huge trend in the 1970’s and pea jackets are a staple piece to this day. Chanel was and still is known for working with: cotton jersey, wool/wool blends, tweed, boucle, silk, flannel, linen, cashmere, and lace. Her silhouette during the 1950’s was based upon the boxy suit she has become so famous for. My opinion of Chanel’s 1950’s design is impressive. Many of the designers during this time had more flowy, floral designs (Dior), but Coco seemed more ahead of her era designing comfortable, tailored, but simplistic and elegant pieces. The 50’s is my favorite era for Chanel, being the peak of the brand and really constructing pieces that define the brand image today.

CHANEL BIO


                Founded in 1909 by Gabrielle Chanel (or as some called her “Coco”), CHANEL has evolved into one of most renowned haute couture labels in the world-wide. In 1913 Coco opened her first millinery shop in Paris, France introducing her legendary women’s sportswear. Within the fashion world, World War I took a heavy toll on production cost and availability to high-fashion fabrics. Primarily due to low cost, Coco began her construction with jersey fabric specializing in pieces such as: blazers, straight linen skirts, sailor tops, long jersey sweaters and skirt-jackets. Chanel’s inspiration was based on the traditional 1920’s apparel and was recognized in 1917 by Harper’s Bazaar as being the name brand “on the list of every buyer”. By 1983, Karl Lagerfeld became the chief designer for Chanel. In 1990 Chanel became the global leader in fragrance sales and production, the first being the classic Chanel No.5. Alain Wertheimer remained chairman of Chanel, CEO and President Françoise Montenay was to bring Chanel into the 21st century. Luxury brand competitor’s include: Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Hermes, and  Moet-Hennessy.

Overview

My opinion of the MISSONI RTW Summer Collection 2011 is very positive. I think this is the most colorful collection I have seen MISSONI design yet, I love the African cultural look of the ensembles. They pieces look comfortable, but high-fashion which is not easy to achieve. The prints and colors of this collection inspire me because when I think of MISSONI, I picture more natural colors and only their signature zig-zag knit fabric. I love that for this collection they went above and beyond their normal standards. The elements I would like to include in my own knitwear design would include: a lot of color, striking patterns, and a wide variety of looks. I adore the 2011 MISSONI Summer Collection, but I would've enjoyed seeing more than just dresses and crop-tops. The color story of the 2011 Summer Collection is very heavy on blues, oranges and yellows with subtle hints of white, green and purple. The collection show a lot of color-blocking and tribal shaped prints (shying away from the regular zig-zag fabric). There are not any special trims that caught my eye, but big accessory for this collection is over-bearingly large floppy hats and wrap up sandals. The very loose fitting caftans and wrap skirts seem to be a repetitive theme throughout the collection, along with the crop tops. As you can see, the MISSONI RTW Summer Collection 2011 is extremely cohesive. From the shoes to the hats to the color blocked and tribal textiles. The target consumer for this collection would be a woman  between 28-45 years of age who loves to travel and isn't shy to state her presence, is happily married with 2 children, enjoys the lavish things in life but would never act above anyone and is extremely financially stable.

Angela Missoni

MISSONI

Founded in Gallarate, Lombardy during 1953 Missoni was well on its way to becoming one of the most demanded knitwear labels world-wide. Newlyweds Tai and Rosita Missoni opened a small knit-wear studio close to home, within a mere five years they were eager and ready to present their first collection showcasing the Missoni label. Only two years later (in 1960) Missoni  had their first feature in a fashion magazine later leading to their first cover with Arianna Magazine, Elle and the infamous Women’s Wear Daily. By the mid 70’s Missoni created an exclusive fragrance line, the 80’s they had expanded into a sports line, 90’s they created a shoe line and by the millennium they tried their hand at interior design. During the 70’s the label had reached its culmination of notoriety. In 1998 they handed the brand over to their only daughter Angela who is still in charge to this day
